HAND INJURY

by

The hand is a complex organ that consists of 27 bones, including the 8 bones of the wrist, several joints, and different types of ligament, tendons and muscles. With its many functions and the constant use, the hands are prone to injuries and diseases. Injury in the hand can be very restrictive and frustrating. So, if you feel pain in your hands, better consult it to an orthopedic professional before that symptom could turn into something else.

A hand injury is either due to a trauma, excessive or repetitive use or degenerative disorders. A trauma can cause a fracture or nerve injuries. Boxer’s fracture (at the base of the little finger) is the most common among fractures. When the trauma affects the nerves, signals danger as it could possibly leads to losing sensation, inability to move the fingers and develop contracture. In short, a nerve injury can lead to disability. Immediate medical attention is therefore needed.

A joint that has been forced to perform beyond its normal range of motion results to sprain. This typically happens to ball players and laborers. Untreated sprains may lead to disability.

Orthopedics evaluates the degree of injury. For hand fracture or dislocation, the doctor would have to immobilize the hand by splinting or budding taping. In some cases, surgery and physical therapy are prescribed.

A common hand disorder called carpal tunnel syndrome is developed from a trauma or injury such as sprain or fracture of the hand or in some cases, repetitive and forceful action. During the process, they experience symptoms like numbness, tingling sensation or pain that eventually lead to muscle weakness and inability to grip. Treatment should be applied during the early detection of the symptoms. An orthopedic practitioner could easily detect the signs and can provide the necessary treatment and therapy before it gets worse.
