Hip pain among athletes

by

The hip attaches the leg to the torso of the body. The femur, head of the thighbone, revolves in a socket which is called the acetabulum. The acetabulum is made up of pelvic bones. Hip pain can arise from the joint itself but there are other several structures that surround the hip that can be a source of pain. As of now trauma is the major cause of hip pain but any source of irritation may cause pain in the area around the hip.

Inflammation can be detected if you are feeling pain or warmth and the area around the hip is swollen and reddish. The hip joint has a space which facilitates the femoral head to move smoothly in the socket of the acetabulum. If by any chance you fall sick or have an injury that causes inflammation this space fills with either fluid or blood. The filling up of the space is potential harmful as the hip capsule will stretch causing pain.

Wearing and tearing of the socket area and the femoral head due to friction can cause so many problems.

The hip is kept in place by the muscles and the tendons that are attached across the hip joint allowing movement on different directions. There are large bursas that are around the hip area which prevents the bones from gliding over bony structures. Pain felt in the hip could not be originating from the hip but it could be as a result of reflection of pain from another part. Reflected pain is like the one that inflame the sciatic nerve and the pain is felt at the hip bone. Most people who are participating in sports and activities that require jumping are prone to hip injury because you don’t have to feel the pain from the hip itself.
