Treating common hip injuries

by

A large number of runners suffer from hip injuries, which are the most painful and persistent injuries. Diagnosing and determining the causes and types of such injuries is a very difficult process due to the various types of injuries that can occur. Below we discuss some of the common injuries caused to the hips and the most appropriate method of treating these.

One type of a hip injury is the flexor strain, which is characterized with a sharp and stabbing ache close to the creases of the legs when the person is running. An individual may also suffer from such a pain while he or she is lying down and pulls up his or her knee close the chest. The ache felt by the person is commonly caused because of an injury occurring to the hip flexor muscle due to tearing or inflammation. When a runner tries to increase the speed or the distance over the capabilities of his or her body, it may result in such type of an injury. The best method to treat this injury is using ice on the painful area while staying away from running for at least one week. After the pain alleviates, the person can begin with some stretching routine using the hip flexor muscles. One can then slowly and gradually increase the pace and distance to ensure no strain occurs that may cause the problem to recur.

Another hip injury caused to runners is the piriformis syndrome, which causes a sharp ache in the depths of the buttocks that does not go away even after your run is over. The common cause for this injury is the tightness of the piriformis, which is a muscle located deep within the buttocks that rubs against the sciatic nerve. The best method to treat this injury is resting for at least two weeks and applying ice to reduce the pain. Massage from a sports therapist is also beneficial after one week of rest to alleviate the soreness.
