What is Osteoarthritis?

by

The Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease. This is a form of arthritis which is basically caused by the breakdown, inflammation and the eventual cartilage loss of the joints. The cartilage does wear out with time thereby making the Osteoarthritis the most common arthritis in the world.

The Osteoarthritis is a progressive disease whose symptoms and signs worsen with time. The condition has been known to have no cure. All in all, there are therapies that can be used to help ease the swelling and relieve the pain. The therapies also help the patients to be more active and mobile with less strain. According to research, the patients who take the precautions early enough when it comes to the Osteoarthritis are able to suppress the symptoms and live a close to normal life.

The Osteoarthritis is basically a disease of the joints. It takes place in areas where cartilages are present and can therefore take place in any joint with reduced cartilage. The most common parts where the conditions can take place include the hips, hands, neck, lower back and the knees.

In spite of the location where the Osteoarthritis takes place, the characteristics of the degenerative arthritis are similar. Some of the most common characteristics of the degenerative joint disease include the bony development around the infected joints, cartilage damages and synovitis which is the mild inflammation of tissues around the joint.

According to statistics, the Osteoarthritis is more common among women than in men. The condition is more prevalent after the age of 50. This is a disease of the old but minor cases have been reported among the young generation. The condition can also result from the occurrence of injuries or a problem with other joints. The condition is not inevitable. Proper feeding and better exercises can help in reducing the occurrence of the Osteoarthritis.
