How can a neurologist help?

by

The brain, the spinal cord, the muscles, and the nerves all constitute the nervous system. One is usually referred to a neurologist in the event of complications in the nervous system. A neurologist can thus be considered a physician who specializes in neurology. This means that he is specially trained to diagnose, investigate, and treat all neurological disorders. However, there are some neurologists who have specialized within the field of neurology.

Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease common affect the nervous systems. Mental disorders like schizophrenia, autism, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and even depression are also known to affect the nervous system.

Neurologists may be involved in either the practice or the research aspects of neurology. Nevertheless, a neurologist can be of significant help when suffering from any disorder of the nervous system. They are able to detect these disorders either by physical examinations or conduct MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and CAT (Computer Axial Tomography) scans. He will then prescribe the appropriate treatment which may involve drugs, a surgical procedure, or even referral to a physiotherapist.

In recent times, neurologists have been drawn into other related conditions to the nervous system, albeit remotely. Neurology has seen overlaps into treatment of such conditions as severe head trauma, stroke cure and care, and more recently the psychiatry field. Though they are classified separately, mental disorders are widely believed neurological disorders that affect the central nervous system. This is supported by the fact that neurological disorders tend to exhibit ‘psychological symptoms’. In fact, a neurologist can sometimes diagnose them through a psycho-analysis, memory and cognitive ability test, speech and languages test, and reflex tests amongst others.

Visiting a neurologist is necessary when issues related to the nervous system are involved. Even a consultative role played by could be crucial for one’s recovery or treatment.
