WHO CAN HELP?

by

Did a heart attack hit you out of the blue? No doubt it left you with questions as to how and why, did this happen? So often when illness hits, we have no answers and have to look for help from the medical profession. Effective Patient Care can relieve many of those worries.

In today’s world of medicine, enormous advancement in technology and computerization has resulted in patients living longer. However, the increasing number of patients has meant that doctors and nurses have less time to spend with each one to explain the basics of their illness. As a result, the support and personal care, once the mainstay of medical treatment, has deteriorated. Thankfully, the medical profession is slowly reverting to a holistic attitude to assist patients in handling their ailments more effectively. This undergirding care has resulted in more calm, speedy and balanced healing.
Patient Care is an art, gleaned mostly from personal experience, as well as from watching others as they support their patients with genuine interest and empathy.

All health care professions realize that there is a right and a wrong way of caring for a patient. Each patient has a different set of variables, such as age, stress, background, age and gender, and will require a slightly different approach to handling their illness. To amalgamate and apply all the knowledge medicine has to offer, it is essential to put the patient, not the illness, at the centre.

It may be necessary to combine several medical disciplines to help a patient understand and handle the illness effectively. A diabetic, with diminished mobility, who suffered heart failure, will require assistance from a physician, dietician, orthopedist and/or physical therapist, as well as a cardiologist. The inclusion of a specialist from each these disciplines into the Patient Care team results in a patient having a deeper understanding of his/her illness. Recover will be faster, not only through knowing how much the team cares, but from the knowledge received from each one.
