Physical therapy may be the only required treatment or it could be in conjunction with other treatments.

After assessment of your condition, a physical therapist will make a treatment plan specifically to what your condition requires. Depending on your health issue, the physical therapist may require several visits. The therapist will first target to reduce the pain and swelling. Then, he or she will be working on increasing your strength, flexibility and endurance.

Part of the treatment plan prepared by the therapist is some exercises that include stretching, weight lifting, walking, and core exercises. Therapist may also provide you with an exercise program that you can do at home.

Physical therapist may use manual therapy, education, techniques like heat, cold, aqua, ultrasound and electrical stimulation.

Your orthopedic doctor who suggest for a physical therapy for your treatment will be working closely with the therapist. Some therapists, however, are board-certified in orthopedics, geriatrics or neurology. Therapists mat also specialize in areas like the bones, muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments; heart and blood vessels, nerves and related muscles; lung problems; cancer-related problems; skin problems; and treatment for older adults and children.

The education of a physical therapist begins in a classroom and laboratory instructions, with basic science such as biology, physics and chemistry.
