An insight to shoulder injuries

The shoulder is a complex structure and comprises three bones, which include the humerus, the scapula, and the clavicle. Approximately twelve major muscles known as deltoids along with numerous minor muscles and tendons collaborate to provide movement to the shoulders. Therefore, any shoulder injury is challenging when you need to pull or push some things.

The rotator cuff is one of the most common regions for shoulder pain and includes any soreness beneath the acromion bone. A specialized healthcare expert will check your movements in various directions to diagnose the extent of pain and cause of the injury. The space between the acromion bone and rotator reduces when you raise your arm. Therefore, this may result in the bone impinging against the bursa, which causes swelling and inflammation. This is very common when you are involved in a task that requires repetitive movements overhead, such as volleyball, swimming, plumbing, or painting.

Another shoulder injury may be caused by injuring the rotator cuff, which may lead to a tear. It can either be chronic or acute tear. Chronic tears occur because the tendon rubs against the bone for an extended period due to overuse. In contrast, an acute tear is caused due to a sudden movement. Because the shoulder is one of the body parts that receive the lowest blood supply, inadequate supply to an injured tendon may lead to tendon degeneration. However, this occurs more to older people than other individuals including sports people.

To treat a shoulder injury, it is important to rest the injured part and stop using the same for a while. Moreover, you must apply ice packs every hour to receive relief from the pain. To reduce the swelling, you must consider wrap a compression bandage to the injured area. Finally, you must elevate the injured part above the heart to reduce the swelling and pain.
