SPINE INJURIES BOTH SIMPLE AND SEVERE

by

Spine injuries are amongst the most serious injuries to the human skeletal structure and can be debilitating, extremely painful and slow to heal. Because the spine has so many smalls bones all of which need to be aligned perfectly to function, it does not take much to put the spine out of alignment. Chiropractors specialize on realignment of the spine and often discover other ailments which have developed due to untreated spine problems.

A herniated disc is a common spine injury which can occur on any of the spinal discs but most commonly it is the lower back (lumbar region) where herniated discs occur. A herniated disc can also be caused from wear and tear of the discs as they become less flexible with age. An injury to the disc causes small cracks which leak out the fluid from within the disc, eventually causing it to break apart. The disc will bulge and become inflamed causing pain and discomfort in all positions, even lying down. Much of the pain is caused from the herniated disc pressing on the nerve below it.

A severe spine injury is one which damages the spinal cord which runs through all the discs the entire length of the spine. An injury to the spine which penetrates the spinal cord can cause paralysis to all areas below the injury. If you suspect this kind of spine injury you should remain immobile until it has been properly diagnosed as further damage can be caused from moving.

Sports spine injuries are less common than other types of sports injuries, however if a player falls on their head during a game it will result in a spine injury. The severity depends on the force of the fall and the heavier the person the more likely the person will sustain a painful injury.
