What is Carpel Tunnel Syndrome?

by

The Carpel Tunnel Syndrome is a painful hand and wrist disorder. To understand the condition better, it requires the understanding of the carpel tunnel. This is a narrow tunnel which is basically formed by bones and other tissues of the wrist. The work of the tunnel is to protect one from median nerve and aids in the thumbs movement as well as the first three fingers. The syndrome occurs when the tissues in the tunnel swell up or get inflamed. The swelling causes them to press against the median nerve thereby resulting in numbness or pain in parts of the hand.

The main cause of the Carpel Tunnel Syndrome has been known to result from doing the same hand movement for a long time. The condition is similar with the people whose daily activity involves pinching and gripping with bent wrists. Common conditions occur to people working as carpenters, assembly workers, computer users, musicians, needlework, meat packers, golfing among other occupations. The Carpel Tunnel Syndrome has been known to affect women most and it also tends to be hereditary.

The Carpel Tunnel Syndrome can also result from wrist injuries such as fractures. The condition can also develop as a result of diabetes, thyroid and rhenumatoid arthritis diseases. It has also been found prominent during the last months of pregnancy.

In spite of the causes of the condition being diverse, the symptoms are similar. Patients suffering from the Carpel Tunnel Syndrome tend to experience numbness or tingling in the hands or fingers, painful wrists or palms or forearm, more pain and numbness at night than during the day, increased pains when using the wrist or hand more, thumb weakness and trouble in gripping of objects. All in all, the symptoms can be treated or relieved using simple methods such as propping the hand up when sleeping, avoiding wrist overuse and avoiding holding the wrist in a downward position.
