Diagnosing and treating hip injury

by

Diagnosing a hip injury is one of the most difficult tasks because of the numerous kinds of injuries that show the same types of symptoms. These injuries can cause severe pain and discomfort and are common with athletes. Identifying and treating some of the common injuries is provided below.

A hip flexor strain causes sharp, stabbing pains near the creases in your feet while running. You may also feel the pain while lying down and pulling your knee towards your chest. The soreness may be caused due to a torn or inflamed hip flexor tendon. If you expand your running speed more than what your body can bear, you may feel a pain in the hip flexor muscle. To treat this type of hip injury, you need to take adequate rest for one week and apply ice pack to the area. You can then recommence your regime by stretching the hip flexor muscle and gradually increasing the mileage.

The piriformis syndrome causes a sharp soreness deep in the buttock region after you complete your run. This type of hip injuries is caused due to the tightening of the piriformis rubbing against the sciatic nerve. You need to rest for a period of two weeks to recover from this injury and must regularly apply ice to relieve the pain. You can also benefit by getting a deep tissue massage from a sports therapist after resting for one week.

Another injury to the hip is the stress fracture the symptoms include soreness at the front that passes towards the groin, legs, or the back. The hip bone may crack due to lower bone density, which is caused due to lack of adequate calcium or hormonal changes. The best method to treat this kind of a hip injury is not running for a three-month period during which you must undergo physical therapy, swimming, and pool running.
