Deep Vein Thrombosis

by

Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) refers to a blood clot that is rooted in one of the main deep veins of the lower legs, thighs or the pelvis. When there is a clot on one vein, the blood circulation at that particular vein is blocked. The blockage can cause swelling an even raise the temperature of the leg.

There are three major factors that bring about the formation of a clot inside the blood vessels. Trauma or other conditions that may lead to the inside damage of the blood vessel is a leading cause of Deep Vein Thrombosis. Changes in the flow of blood in unusual patterns can lead to partial or complete blockage of blood flow. Hypercoagulability may lead to blood clotting in the leg preventing the flow of blood from the lower side of the leg back to the heart.

There are many components that may lead to deep vein thrombosis some of which we practice in our daily life activities. Sitting for a long period of time as in long plane of car rides or having bed rest for a long time, immobility, like after an injury can cause serious clotting leading to leg pain.

Some past medical procedures such as recent surgery, orthopedic or gynecological and heart surgery can bring about clotting. Obesity causes heart failures and then there is a problem of the heart taking back blood for purification and as a result of this the already used blood clots. Sometimes natural causes such as being in higher places with greater altitudes of over 14,000 feet can also cause cloud to clot and block its flow.

You can notice a person who is suffering from Deep Vein Thrombosis just by observing the person. There is some swelling which is characterized by redness of the skin. If the clot is there for a long period of time there would be swelling and shooting temperatures especially on night periods. When there is bending of the leg the pain worsens and a person begins developing leg cramps.
