Patient care has emerged as one of the fastest growing professions in the medical field. It is also one of the most demanding professions in the health care provision industry. A patient care technician basically serves three major functions in medical practices. The first one is prevention of illnesses or infectious diseases. Secondly he or she plays an important role in treatment of persons afflicted with different diseases and lastly in management of recovering patients and in preserving their well being both physically and mentally.

Patient care services are provided in many settings including hospitals, home-care settings, clinics, and assisted living facilities. Although patient care technicians function in similar ways as nurses, their jobs include additional responsibilities such as acquiring more information on patients’ vital signs as well as collecting blood and other necessary samples from the patient for further diagnosis. This growth can be attributed to a rapidly aging population and increase in nursing homes and home care facilities nationwide for patients suffering from chronic diseases and disabling conditions. Entering this profession requires a degree in health care and a dedication to work closely with patients in different stages of illness. Patient care involves application of both the scientific methods of treatment as well as the use of humane and genuine concern for the patient’s welfare.
