Platelet rich plasma therapy to relieve leg pain

by

Pain in the feet is a common complaint in a large number of the American population. Approximately one in every five American suffers from leg pain, which is caused due to heel spurs that cause the pain. Related to this condition is the plantar fasciitis, which causes inflammation in the primary structure on the bottom of the foot. The plantar fascia attaches the rear of the foot to the heel bone and an increase in the tension and inflammation causes pulling on the heel bone, which causes heel spurs.

These conditions are extremely difficult to treat effectively and many patients try different types of treatment methods. These include massaging, steroid injections, acupuncture, and orthotics. Most patients can witness relief within one year; however, some patients do not find relief with these methods. Many physicians provide ultrasound shock wave therapy to patients to break the heel spurs. Nonetheless, ten to fifteen percent patients continue to feel the pain in their feet. Therefore, many patients choose plantar fasciitis as the treatment method of the last resort; however, this method is not very effective and does not relieve the pain as desired. Moreover, many people do not choose foot surgery due to the related complications, such as worsening of the soreness or infections.

Therefore, platelet rich plasma therapy is a unique and different method to help patients overcome plantar fasciitis and leg pain. This method does not require any surgical procedures or long time periods to alleviate the soreness. This therapy uses the patient’s blood to cure the condition and requires two ounces that is kept in specialized centrifuge.

The platelet rich plasma is then drawn inside a syringe and injected at the bottom of the foot, which is locally anesthetized. The injection must ideally be injected in the region of the heel spur where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel bone. After the injection, the patient finds natural relief within six to eight weeks. With no recovery time or rehabilitation, this therapy provides relief to almost ninety percent of the patients for long periods.
