Long term implications of spinal cord injuries

by

More than quarter million people are affected by a spine injury with more than eleven thousand new patients added annually. Some of the common causes for such injuries include vehicular accidents, trauma, violence, sports, and falls. Sometimes these injuries leave the patients with implications in the long term, which forces them to deal with these for their remaining lives.

One of the complications of a spine injury is the loss of bladder control due to the injury. Therefore, the individual is at a higher risk of kidney infections, bladder infections, or kidney stones. Hence, a higher intake of fluids is recommended and learning new methods to relieve your bladder is necessary. Additionally, the patient may lose control on the bowel movement due to loss of control in the muscles that regulate the anus. You must make dietary modifications and follow a bowel routine to cope with such complications.

Often, the patient loses all sensations below the injured part either fully or partially. Hence, you may not feel hot, cold, or any pain, which may lead to pressure sores. Therefore, you need to pay strict attention to the skin after a spine injury to prevent such ulcers, which are very common in patients.

Another complication of spine injuries is the sudden change in the circulatory changes, such as low or high blood pressure. In some severe cases of such injuries, the patients may suffer from breathing problems, such as coughing or clearing secretions. Additionally, the victims may have to deal with spastic or flaccid paralysis.

It is a common myth among people that spine injury victims do not feel any soreness. However, this is not correct as overusing some muscles causes pain. The long term implications of these injuries require patients to make lifestyle changes to enable them to cope with these, which is an important focus for the rehabilitation therapy.
