HAND INJURIES ARE COMMON

by

The most common hand injuries are from falling on your hands as it is natural to put your arms out to try to save yourself. Punching hard things in anger will also cause serious bone and tissue damage and should be avoided as a way to vent anger. Intoxication makes it difficult to discern how hard you are striking and people often obtain injuries from hitting hard objects with their hands when they are intoxicated. Hospital emergency rooms have their fair share of these types of injuries.

An injured hand needs to be accessed for a break and then plastered or strapped if it is found to be broken. Reduced use will be needed to heal the injury which could mean time off work and avoiding all strenuous activities which use the hands. Hairline fractures can often be missed on x-rays and an orthopedic examination is necessary to diagnose. Fractures need complete rest preferably in a cast or in an orthopedic brace.

Broken fingers can often need orthopedic surgery to correct misalignment and ensure that full mobility is returned to the fingers. Musicians and surgeons both use their fingers for their life passion and therefore should avoid any undue strain and repetitive stress injuries to the fingers and hands.

Heat therapy is quite helpful for arthritis injuries of the hands and can be applied regularly at home to ease pain and avoid swelling. Gentle physical manipulation also helps arthritis sufferers who often have arthritis in their hands as well as other parts of the body. The hands are particularly prone to arthritis because they are exposed to the extremes of weather and life’s knocks and bumps. Exercises which loosen the muscles, improve flexibility and ease the pain can be demonstrated by an orthopedic therapist so you can perform them at home.
